Sickle Cell Surveillance at Sickle Cell Anemia Diagnosis Priority Sites of NPHL

Summary

Sickle cell disease is a group of disorders typically inherited from parents that affects the hemoglobin molecule inside red blood cells. It is one of the most common hemoglobinopathy affecting 20 – 25 million populations globally. Nepal lies in the southern part of Asia where most of the indigenous group of people are living. A study from Nepal reported high burden of sickle cell disease among indigenous Tharu population. There are very limited study regarding the burden of sickle cell diseases among Tharu and other communities in Nepal. Nepal government has started diagnostic services for the diagnosis of sickle cell disease from the past few years but has not been able to implement a strong plan to control this inheritable disease in absence of generalized data of the affected group and communities. In this regard we targeted to find the status of sickle cell disease among different communities using secondary data from all over Nepal.

The study will be carried out for the period of three months and financial support will be provided by National Public Health Laboratory. Secondary data will be collected from the testing site, under National Public Health Laboratory to meet objective of the study.

The collected data will be entered and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The final report will be communicated to Ministry of Health and Populations.

Hematological and Biochemical Changes in Sickle Cell Disease Patients: A Study from Nepal

Summary

Sickle cell disease is a group of disorders typically inherited from parents that affects the hemoglobin molecule inside red blood cells. It is one of the most common hemoglobinopathy affecting 20 – 25 million populations globally. The sickle hemoglobin (HbS) inside red blood cells undergoes frequent sickling and de-sickling phenomenon during de-oxygenated and oxygenated state. This causes structural changes in red cells leading to changes in hematological parameters. It has also been postulated that some biochemical parameters too are changed in such state. Thus, we are conducting this study with the objective of measuring hematological and biochemical parameters of sickle cell disease patients and comparing it with normal control subjects.

The study will be carried out for the period of six months and the economic aid will be provided by National Public Health Laboratory. The study will be a descriptive cross-sectional. Sample will be collected from the patients visiting NPHL for sickle cell testing after diagnosis of sickle cell disease.

The collected data will be entered and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The final report will be communicated to National Public Health Laboratory and will be published in a peer reviewed journal.
